The Table

God isn't asking you to care for the needs of people you don't know or understand. God is welcoming you to a table where you will come to know and understand people. Caring for needs flows naturally from the encounter. We don't have to be altruistic, it's clear that we are not, we only need to be in the kind of relationships where the other becomes as real to us as we are to ourselves.

Charity is hierarchical, invulnerable, and easy. God's solution to injustice isn't charity, it's proximity. And this is why income inequality it wrong. It separates people from the their salvation, the shalom of God: "The webbing together of God, humans, and all creation in justice, fulfillment, and delight is what the Hebrew prophets call shalom."
