When I fall asleep and my autopilot clicks on, I slip unconsciously into the cultural stream of consumer capitalist indulgences which numb my senses and harden my heart.
Eventually, I snap out of the dream when I notice how selfish and joyless I've become. That's when I remember that I need religion.
Not the Sunday morning social habit that passed for religion most of my life, but the daily practices that keep me awake, vulnerable, and connected to my desire for solidarity and shalom. When I fail to DO these religiously, I slip back into the cultural steam that feeds injustice, ecological destruction, and apathy.
Whatever "saved by faith alone" may mean, the concept does not save me from sleep walking through life and missing the divine invitation to co-create a beautiful alternative to the domination system.
