What if "love your enemy" is not so much a command to change your behavior as an invitation to receive new eyes. The way of seeing that enabled Jesus to forgive the ignorance of those who crucified him.

When asked the question -- probably for the hundredth time, "what would you do if a criminal held a gun to your wife's head?" Greg Boyd flipped the scenario, complexifying it by seeing it through the eyes of God the loving father of all, "what would you do if your son held a gun to your wife's head?"
